Very first game drive in Botswana

Filed under: 2010,November — Hennie van Heerden @ 1:13 pm

As I said, we had only just arrived and immediately went on gamedrive. It’s a completely different thing when you are out with a fellow photographer. It is amazing how long one can talk about apertures, shutterspeeds, color modes etc. 🙂

That first gamedrive immediately showed the diversity of the beautiful Mashatu area. There are plains, marshes, hills, rivers and forests, harbouring many different sorts of animals and birds. I was really surprised to see such a variety on the first drive already.  Even leopard!! We also encountered a beautiful lioness with her 3 cubs. Colorful White-fronted Bee-eaters were sailing over the almost dry riverbed, where there were only some pools left. Although a bit far, they sure made beautiful practicing material!

One of the things I like most of the private game reserves is that the vehicles are allowed off-road to follow the animals at close range. You get to see so much more! Also the night drives are something special. At sunset, the nocturnal animals come out who you normally wouldn’t see, like porcupine and owls .
